On March 18, 2026, while hiking in Madeira, Prof. Dr. Hrvoje Gold passed away unexpectedly. A professor, innovator and passionate mountaineer for over five decades, Hrvoje dedicated his life to the development of hiking trails in Croatia — leading the Commission for Hiking Trails of the Croatian Mountaineering Association and bringing his expertise in intelligent transport systems, GIS and artificial intelligence into the service of mountaineering.
To EUMA, he was more than an expert. As a long-standing member of our Hiking Trails Expert Group, he was a familiar and valued presence — most recently at the European Trails Conferences in Paris (2024) and Macugnaga (2025). His word, his dedication and his warm authority will be deeply missed.
Our deepest condolences go to his family, his colleagues at the Croatian Mountaineering Association, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
