Proposal for a Long-Distance Hiking Trail along the European Green Belt

27 May 2025

We are excited to announce a promising new initiative: a partnership between the European Green Belt Initiative (EGBI), the European Hiking Federation (ERA), and the European Mountaineering Association (EUMA) is exploring the development of one or more European long-distance paths (E-paths) themed around the European Green Belt.

The proposed European Green Belt Hiking Trail aims to offer hikers a unique opportunity to explore and learn about the rich history, culture, and natural heritage along this extraordinary corridor. At the same time, it will contribute to the sustainable development and conservation of this important ecological and cultural landscape.

Currently, the partnership is in the initial phase of assessing existing hiking infrastructure within the geographical scope of the European Green Belt. They are identifying funding needs and devising strategies to integrate scenic and meaningful hiking experiences with environmental conservation goals. The first steps are supported by the EU-funded BESTbelt project, yet additional funding will be necessary to fully realize the trail in the long term.

For more detailed information, please refer to this document, which includes key facts and a map showcasing the European Green Belt, existing E-paths, and other relevant hiking infrastructure.

To learn more about this exciting project and engage in the discussion, you are warmly invited to join an online information webinar on 28 May from 17:00 to 18:00 CET. Please register via Zoom.

We look forward to your participation and to advancing the future of the European Green Belt Hiking Trail together.
