Forests - new EU strategy (public consultation)

10 Mar 2021

Under the European Green Deal, the European Commission has announced a new EU forest strategy that will build on its biodiversity strategy, cover the whole forest cycle and promote the many services forests provide. The strategy will aim to ensure healthy & resilient forests that contribute to biodiversity, climate goals & secure livelihoods, and that support a circular bioeconomy. It will focus on EU forest protection, restoration & sustainable management, and on world forests where not already covered.

Forest areas are very important for mountaineering community because we perform a wide range of our activities in forests and there we have a lot of our mountaineering infrastructure (paths/trails, huts and climbing areas). That’s why we should take part in the European Commission public consultation for new EU strategy for forests. We encourage all national mountaineering federations to contribute to this consultation by filling in the online questionnaire. We propose to all national mountaineering federations to pay special attention to questions regarding use of forests for recreation. Also to add additional comments regarding importance of forest areas for mountaineering and that mountaineering infrastructure (paths/trails, huts and climbing areas) should have special status in forest areas. For reasons of transparency, organisations taking part in public consultations are asked to register in the EU’s Transparency Register.

We also propose to national mountaineering federations to encourage your clubs/sections and your members, especially those who are experts for forests, to fill in the online questionnaire. All citizens and organisations are welcome to contribute to this public consultation. Questionnaires are available in all official EU languages and you can submit your responses in any official EU language.

The feedback period will finish on 19th of April 2021.
